Is it also difficult to sift through all that has passed – to the extent history and lost history allow – and see where we as Americans and Native Americans are today? And are all of these issues incredibly complex and still at the heart of many contemporary conflicts and misunderstandings today? Yet, what I am thinking about now as I put pen to paper is the idea that “who I am” and “who I exist as” are two things that necessarily exist as concurrent ideologies and lives.

The American Dream promises a white picket fence home, a loving family, and a well-paying job that will give you the resources to provide for your family.

This idea is becoming more abstract to the average American.

What Does It Mean to Be an American: The American Dream The American Dream is an indispensable part of American cultural heritage and society.

It is glorified in Hollywood movies, pop songs, and comics books.

This duality is at the very heart of who I am, a very complex yet singular human being from two very distinct cultures.
