To win this award, students must indicate information about their parents’ employment, their intended major, and their career plans on their application.
If you score high enough on the PSAT (or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), you may be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Students who are accepted to the program win $2,500 in scholarship money.
As I may or may not have said already, I was indeed a National Merit Finalist, but before becoming a finalist, you must get to the semi-finalist level by qualifying through your PSAT/NMSQT score.
Once you get to the semi-finalist round, there’s a pretty decent application process to go through in order to be selected as a finalist.Finalists who don’t win the National Merit Scholarship or a Corporate-Sponsored Scholarship still have a chance to win a College-Sponsored scholarship.College-sponsored scholarships are usually between 0-00. To win, students need to mark one of the sponsor colleges as their first choice college on their application.If you are a semi-finalist, then you are probably a good candidate for other merit scholarships.If you're a high school junior or the parent of a high school junior, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the National Merit Scholarship qualifications, as most juniors will take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in October of their junior year.(Sometimes these may seem pretty similar, but I always considered awards and prizes to be honors and recognitions whereas extracurricular activities would be the clubs or organizations you participate in.There may be some overlap between the two categories occasionally.Even if you’re not sure what your top choice is, you should still put one of the sponsoring colleges as your first choice or add one to your application.You should continue applying to other scholarships while you are waiting to hear if you’ve won a National Merit Scholarship.Over 8,600 students were selected as Merit Scholarship winners in 2018.Semi-finalists are invited to apply for the National Merit Scholarship through their high schools.
