The competition is designed to encourage high levels of scholarship among BYU students and promote understanding and appreciation of BYU’s mission and legacy and the challenges of its great founders.
This year offers a special twist as BYU celebrates Cosmo during Homecoming. Not only has Cosmo entertained the BYU community for more than 65 years, but he has become a tradition and an enduring symbol of the BYU true blue spirit. This is about the length that BYU Magazine will allow for publishing.
The winner receives $50,000 and may be invited to the St.
Francis College campus in Brooklyn, NY to deliver a talk about their work or teach a mini fiction workshop to St. This $10,000 award recognizes “young authors,” which the rules define as any author aged 35 or younger.

When I was about 12, I saw an ad in a magazine for a poetry contest that sounded fancy and impressive, something like “International Library of Poetry.” I bled poetry at that age, so I crossed my fingers and sent in a poem I’d been slaving over for weeks.
