In the 1960s he started to write openly about gay love.Morgan was also a highly respected translator, winning the 2001 Weidenfeld Prize for Translation. Hackles on puddles rise, old mattresses puff briefly and subside. The man lies late since he has lost his job, smokes on one elbow, letting his coughs fall thinly into an air too poor to rob.

He opens the poem by describing the setting which encourages the reader to picture the desolate estate: “A mean wind wanders through the backcourt trash.” By using “A” at the start, as opposed to “The”, Morgan creates a sense of unimportance and purposelessness.
He translated work from Russian, Portuguese, Latin, Hungarian, French, German, Italian, and other languages. Widely recognized as one of the most influential Scottish poets of the 20th century, Morgan was named the first Scots Makar, or Scottish national poet, in 2004.
'Glasgow, 5th March, 1971', by Edwin Morgan, is a modern poem about a shocking crime committed upon 'a young man and his girl' by 'two youths' and witnessed by two expressionless drivers who pass by without turning a hair.
Straight away the opening line sets the scene and immediately gives us an image of the place and just how depressing the It also gives us a clear image that all the window are destroyed and that children are playing some ofrm of game, this also suggests that the children are bored and have nothing to do so they try to smash window.
Also gives off a sense of decay and left over ruins.
It deals with an important issue such as poverty and we see the reality of it and how it shouldn’t be ignored.
By examining Morgans use of techniques we will be able to seen more of the effects of poverty and how and things actually are Morgans makes the poem particularly effective by the use of sonnet structure, the first 8 lines show us the area and the surroundings and the second half shows us the inside of the situation including people having to deal with this poverty.
The poet deals with this part particulary well as he makes us think about how they are stuck within poverty and how it seems to be difficult to get out of it.
We wonder why Morgan has to show that there is some hope.
